After serving as a mechanic in the Italian Air Force, during World War II, Lamborghini went into business building tractors, taking advantage of military hardware left over from the war effort. In the mid-1950s, Lamborghini's tractor business, Trattori Lamborghini SpA, has become one of the largest agricultural equipment manufacturers in this country. He is also a successful owner of a gas heater and air conditioner factory.

Lamborghini's increasing wealth allowed him to cultivate his childhood interest in cars, has several luxury cars, including Alfa Romeo, Lancias, Maseratis, Mercedes and Ferrari's first Benz.He buying a 250GT, in 1958, and continue to have a few more. While he liked the car, he thought they were too noisy and the right rough to the driveway, likening them to track the car repurposed. Lamborghini immediately got the urge to continue pursuing his own car production.

In July 1963, a billboard erected on the 12th through Modena, in the commune of Sant'Agata Bolognese, less than 30 kilometers (19 miles) from Cento. Sign states "Lamborghini Stabilimento Qui Automobile" (English: the Lamborghini car factory here), boasting 46,000 square meters (500,000 sq ft) of space. On October 30, 1963, car makers are included, and Automobili Lamborghini Società per Azioni was born. Its founder Ferruccio Lamborghini has chosen to open a car factory in Sant'Agata for several reasons.

A lucrative financial agreements with the communist leadership of the city means he will not pay taxes on profits for the plant's first ten years of trading, along with receiving interest from 19% to profits when they are stored in the bank. As part of the agreement, the workers must be union. Commune location, deep in the cradle of the Italian car industry, the Lamborghini means that the operation will have easy access to machine shops, coachbuilders, and workers with experience in the automotive industry.

Even before opening the door Automobili, Lamborghini has maintained the services of an engineer Giotto Bizzarrini. Bizzarrini is part of the so-called "gang of five" that have become part of a mass exodus from Ferrari in 1961, right after helping develop the famous 250 GTO. Lamborghini had hired him as a freelancer, and commissioned him to design a V12 engine for Ferrari's 3-liter power, but designed from scratch to be used in street cars, in contrast with Ferrari engines detuned race. Bizzarrini L will be paid 4.5 million for his work, plus a bonus for each unit of brake horse power engine can produce more than version. The Ferrari designers to create 3.5-liter, 9.5:1 compression ratio, 360 bhp engine came to life for first time on May 15, 1963, at the corner of the Lamborghini tractor factory.

Bizzarrini create a machine with dry lubrication-that which produces maximum horsepower at 9800 rpm, almost no configuration is right for a road car engine.Lamborghini, who wants decent machine suitable for use in large tourer, very angry, and asking for substantial changes in design machine. The resulting hostilities led to decomposition and Lamborghini Bizzarrini relationships; the latter did not receive full compensation for his work until the Lamborghini was ordered to do so by the court.
